Icon of the Seas Neighborhoods

We just returned from a three day preview sailing onboard Royal Caribbean’s brand new Icon of the Seas. Let me just say that this ship is amazing!  Royal Caribbean has totally knocked it out of the park with this ship.  I have always been a fan of the Oasis Class ships (Oasis of the Seas, Allure of the Seas, Harmony of the Seas, Symphony of the Seas, Wonder of the Seas and soon arriving Utopia of the Seas).  The Icon of the Seas is everything I love about Oasis Class, but on steroids.  Now, when I say that, don’t be misled.  The Icon really isn’t that much bigger than the Oasis Class.  Here is a quick comparison:

Oasis of the Seas

Wonder of the Seas

Icon of the Seas

Gross Tons

226,838

235,600

250,800

Length

1,187 feet

1,188 feet

1,198 feet

Width

215 feet

211 feet

213 feet

Double Occupancy Guests

5,602

5,610

Decks

18 (16 guest)

18 (16 guest)

20 (18 guest)

Staterooms

2,801

2,867

2,805

So, as you can see, the Icon is not that much larger than Oasis Class at all.  It does however feel a lot larger.  The spaces have really been opened up, especially the promenade area.  Gone are the promenade view staterooms.  They are replaced by other public spaces (bars, entertainment areas).  Royal Caribbean has also opened the promenade area to views of the ocean which brings in more light and makes the space feel wide open.

While we were onboard, we were able to view a number of different stateroom types and we made sure to visit each neighborhood on board. There are eight of them on Icon of the Seas:

Aquadome: a tranquil oasis by day and vibrant hot spot by night with restaurants, bars, wraparound ocean views and entertainment in the next-level AquaTheater.  Behind the Aquadome is the Overlook, which is an incredible spot for lounging, looking out at the amazing forward views, or enjoying a cocktail at the bar.

Central Park: A real park and all that comes with it, including more than 33,500 plants. With a new live music venue, windows with champagne and sushi, and even an all-new dining experience that pairs eight courses with music, wine and more, evolving what’s become an all-time favorite was anything but a walk in the park.

Chill Island: Four of the seven pools on board are in this three-deck slice of paradise. There’s one for every mood, each with prime ocean views, from the vibrant Swim & Tonic - the cruise line's first swim-up bar at sea - to Royal Bay Pool, the largest pool at sea. The lineup also includes Cloud 17, an adults-only retreat, and the serene, infinity-edge Cove Pool. Plus, The Lime & Coconut returns with four locations, including the brand's first frozen cocktail bar.

Royal Promenade: The next generation of Royal Promenade comes together with revolutionary feats in engineering, architecture and design to create a place with experiences for everyone day and night. From the neighborhood’s first ocean views to the seamless connection between two floors of 15-plus new and returning restaurants, bars and lounges, alongside dedicated areas for kids and teens, shows, activities like ice skating, and more, it’s the place to be and be seen.

Surfside: A neighborhood made for young families from end to end, Surfside is where adults and kids ages six and under can stay and play all day. There are three water experiences, including a pool for the grownups, and steps away are dining options, a bar, the signature carousel, an arcade, Adventure Ocean, and Social020 for teens.

Suite Neighborhood: Just steps away from your room, discover a retreat with upscale amenities exclusively for suite guests. Soak up rays on the two-story Grove Suite Sun Deck or take a tranquil dip in the private pool and hot tub. Savor upscale cuisine at two restaurants for VIPs only. Indulge in the casual elegance of Coastal Kitchen or al fresco Mediterranean bliss at The Grove. And at the Suite Lounge, enjoy bites and cocktails over jaw-dropping views right into the heart of the revolutionary AquaDome.

The Hideaway: An adults only (18+) area floating in mid-air eight stories up, the first suspended infinity pool at sea brings beach club vibes to the back of the ship at this adults-only paradise. Spend the day sipping bubbly champagne cocktails while the DJ spins relaxing beach beats until after the sun goes down. And whether you’re popping bottles from your full-sized daybed in the middle of the water or kicking back at the wraparound bar — every view is the best view at The Hideaway.

Thrill Island: Vacationers can scale new heights and reach top speeds with adventures that run the gamut, including Category 6 waterpark, the largest waterpark at sea; the daring Crown’s Edge experience; and returning favorites like the FlowRider surf simulator and new takes on mini golf at Lost Dunes and rock climbing at Adrenaline Peak.

There really is something for everyone on board this ship.  Whether you are looking for a quiet, relaxing place to just hang out in or an action packed family fun spot to keep the kids entertained, you can find it all on Icon of the Seas.

The demand is high for this ship, and the current rates reflect that.  If you are flexible in your travel dates, we might be able to find some great block space pricing that could literally save you thousands.  If you are ready for your Icon of the Seas adventure, send me an email or give me a call and let me help get you onboard!

Exploring the Untamed Beauty of Alaska

Okay, I know Winter is approaching, and we don’t always think of cold destinations during that time. However, if you would like to consider Alaska for summer vacation of 2024, it’s a great time to start planning.  Alaska is an extremely popular destination for summer travel and tours and cruises often book up quickly and well in advance.  So I wanted to put some information out there to help you decide whether Alaska is a destination for you and if it is, some things that should be on your list to do/see while you are there.

Welcome to the Last Frontier - Alaska! With its rugged wilderness, towering glaciers, and abundant wildlife, Alaska is a true paradise for nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers. Let's embark on a journey through this untamed land and discover the unparalleled beauty it has to offer.

Majestic Glaciers and Fjords: Alaska is renowned for its spectacular glaciers, such as the iconic Mendenhall Glacier near Juneau and the imposing Hubbard Glacier in Yakutat Bay. Witnessing the massive ice formations calve into the sea is a breathtaking experience. Take a glacier cruise or go kayaking amidst the icebergs to marvel at nature's frozen wonders up close.

Wildlife Encounters: Alaska is home to an incredible variety of wildlife. From grizzly bears fishing for salmon in rivers to majestic bald eagles soaring through the sky, there's something awe-inspiring around every corner. Visit Denali National Park for a chance to spot moose, caribou, wolves, and maybe even glimpse the elusive Denali, North America's tallest peak.

Allure of the Northern Lights: In the winter months, Alaska transforms into a surreal wonderland as the shimmering Northern Lights dance across the night sky. Head north to Fairbanks or the remote town of Nome for prime viewing spots. Be prepared to be enchanted by this celestial light show that will leave you spellbound.

Outdoor Adventures: With its vast wilderness, Alaska offers endless opportunities for outdoor adventures. Go hiking along scenic trails, raft down raging rivers, or embark on a thrilling dog sledding journey through the snow-covered backcountry. Fishing enthusiasts will find paradise in Alaska's world-class salmon and halibut fishing spots.

Rich Native Culture: Alaska has a rich Native heritage, and experiencing the local culture is a must. Visit cultural centers like the Alaska Native Heritage Center in Anchorage to learn about the traditions, art, and history of Alaska's Native peoples. Engage in traditional activities, taste indigenous cuisine, and immerse yourself in the vibrant stories of the land.

Alaska is an extraordinary destination that captivates and inspires. From its awe-inspiring glaciers to its abundant wildlife and rich native culture, every corner of this remarkable state has something unique to offer. Whether you're seeking adventure, tranquility, or a connection with nature, Alaska is sure to leave an indelible mark on your soul.

Here are 10 fun facts about Alaska:

1. Size Matters: Alaska is the largest state in the United States, spanning over 663,000 square miles. To put it into perspective, Alaska is twice the size of Texas!

2. Land of Extremes: Alaska is a land of extremes. It is home to Denali (formerly known as Mount McKinley), the highest peak in North America, standing at a staggering 20,310 feet (6,190 meters). On the other end of the spectrum, it also boasts the lowest point in North America, the shoreline of the Bering Sea.

3. Midnight Sun and Polar Nights: Due to its proximity to the Arctic Circle, parts of Alaska experience unique celestial phenomena. In the summer, areas like Fairbanks and Barrow bask in the "midnight sun," where the sun remains visible 24 hours a day. Conversely, during winter, they enter a period of "polar nights," where the sun does not rise above the horizon.

4. Glaciers Galore: Alaska is home to more than 100,000 glaciers. Among them is the Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve, which showcases a stunning display of glaciers carving their way through the landscape.

5. The Iditarod: Alaska is famous for its annual Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, considered one of the world's most challenging and iconic sled dog races. Mushers and their teams of dogs brave extreme conditions while traversing over 1,000 miles from Anchorage to Nome.

6. Abundant Wildlife: Alaska is a wildlife enthusiast's dream. It is home to an array of animals such as brown bears, moose, caribou, gray wolves, bald eagles, and whales. The Katmai National Park and Preserve provide an excellent opportunity to view wild bears fishing for salmon.

7. State Motto: Alaska's state motto is "North to the Future," symbolizing the state's opportunities and limitless potential for growth and progress.

8. Russian Influence: Before it became a U.S. state, Alaska was a Russian colony. Russian influence is still visible in places like Sitka, where St. Michael's Cathedral stands as a reminder of the Russian Orthodox presence.

9. Dog Mushing is the State Sport: Given its strong ties to the Iditarod race, it's no surprise that dog mushing is the official state sport of Alaska.

10. Aurora Borealis: Alaska is one of the best places on Earth to witness the mesmerizing spectacle of the Northern Lights, also known as the Aurora Borealis. The vibrant colors dancing across the night sky are a true natural wonder.

The best way to visit Alaska largely depends on your preferences and the experiences you wish to have. Here are a couple of options to consider:

Cruises: Alaskan cruises are a popular choice for many travelers. They offer the opportunity to witness the state's stunning coastal scenery, visit multiple ports, and enjoy onboard amenities. Cruises typically depart from Seattle, Vancouver, or Anchorage, and often include stops at places like Juneau, Skagway, and Ketchikan while also having a day or two of sailing amongst the glaciers.  You can also add a land portion to your cruise which will either go before or after the cruise.  This way, you can go deeper into Alaska and see things like Denali National Park (which you cannot see from the cruise itself).  These land portions, called cruise tours, can range from 3 – 7 days, and sometimes even longer.

Guided Tours: Joining a guided tour allows you to have a curated experience with knowledgeable local guides. Whether it's an adventure tour, wildlife-focused excursion, or cultural immersion trip, there are various options available that cater to different interests. This can be a great option if you prefer a structured itinerary or if you want to engage in specific activities like glacier hiking or bear viewing.

Keep in mind that Alaska is vast, and transportation within the state can vary. It's essential to plan ahead and consider factors like travel time, weather conditions, and accessibility to the places you wish to visit. Whichever option you choose, be prepared to immerse yourself in the awe-inspiring beauty and wilderness that Alaska has to offer!

So, what are you waiting for? Give me a call, send me an email or visit my website (I have it set to take you to the Alaska page!).  Let’s start planning for you to get ready to embark on an unforgettable journey through the untamed beauty of Alaska!

Escape to Paradise: Discovering the Beauty of the Maldives

Imagine your feet sinking into the soft, white sands as you marvel at the crystal-clear turquoise waters in front of you. Welcome to the Maldives, a tropical paradise unlike any other. With its pristine beaches, vibrant coral reefs, and luxurious resorts, this archipelago in the Indian Ocean offers an unforgettable escape for those seeking a slice of heaven on earth. The Maldives make up a total of twenty six atolls, with many (otherwise uninhabited) islands being occupied by a single resort hotel. Vacationers usually spend much of their time on hotel premises, so picking the right island is a matter of relative importance. In this blog post, we will guide you through the wonders of the Maldives and show you why it should be at the top of your travel bucket list.

The Maldives is renowned for its vibrant underwater ecosystem, making it a dream destination for snorkelers and scuba divers. Dive into the warm waters and encounter an array of colorful fish, graceful manta rays, and even gentle whale sharks. Explore the coral gardens and witness the stunning marine life in their natural habitat. Don't forget to capture these breathtaking moments with an underwater camera!

The Maldives is synonymous with luxury and relaxation. Indulge in world-class spa treatments, unwind in your private villa on stilts above the water, and savor gourmet cuisine prepared by renowned chefs. Many resorts offer exclusive amenities, such as private pools, personal butlers, and even underwater restaurants. Staying at upscale resorts, however, isn't the only option available to visitors. Since recently, the Maldives have appeared on the radars of budget travelers - a few inns and guest houses have opened up on the larger, inhabited islands (Guraidhoo and Maafushi, to name a couple). This has given start to breaking down the age-old conception of Maldives as an exclusive, luxury destination solely for honeymooners and the world's rich and famous. Whether you're celebrating a honeymoon, anniversary, or simply treating yourself to a well-deserved vacation, the Maldives has it all.

With over 1,000 coral islands to explore, island-hopping is a must-do activity in the Maldives. Discover secluded islands with pristine beaches, bask in the warm sunshine, and immerse yourself in the local culture. Take a traditional Maldivian boat, known as a dhoni, and sail from one idyllic island to another, encountering friendly locals along the way. Each island has its own unique charm, and you'll never run out of places to discover.

Prepare to be mesmerized by the captivating sunsets in the Maldives. Whether you're lounging on the beach or enjoying a romantic dinner on a private deck, the vibrant hues of orange, pink, and purple painting the sky will leave you in awe. This magical moment creates the perfect backdrop for unforgettable memories and romantic strolls along the shoreline.

The Maldives is committed to preserving its natural beauty and marine life. Many resorts have adopted eco-friendly practices, such as sustainable architecture, coral reef conservation programs, and marine research initiatives. Dive enthusiasts can even participate in coral planting activities, contributing to the preservation of this fragile ecosystem. By vacationing in the Maldives, you can enjoy a slice of paradise while supporting eco-tourism efforts.

The Maldives is a dream destination for travelers seeking a luxurious and unforgettable escape. From its pristine beaches and vibrant coral reefs to its world-class resorts and rich local culture, this tropical paradise offers a magical experience like no other. So, pack your swimsuit, grab your camera, and embark on a journey to the Maldives, where paradise awaits at every turn.

The best time to visit the Maldives is during the dry season, which runs from November to April. During this time, you can expect sunny skies, calm seas, and perfect beach weather. The temperatures average around 80°F, making it ideal for swimming, snorkeling, and basking in the sun. Just keep in mind that the Maldives experiences a monsoon season from May to October, with increased rainfall and stronger winds. So if you want to make the most of your Maldives escape, plan your trip between November and April.

Ready to start planning your trip to the Maldives?  I can certainly help with that!  Send me an email or give me a call to get started!

Why You Should Use A Travel Agent For Your Next Vacation

Planning a vacation can be both exciting and overwhelming. With numerous options, deals, and destinations to consider, it's easy to feel lost in a sea of information. That's where a travel agent comes in. In this blog post, we'll discuss the many benefits and value of using a travel agent for your next getaway. From saving you time and stress to providing expert advice, let's explore how these travel professionals can transform your vacation experience.

1. Time-Saving Experts:
One of the biggest advantages of using a travel agent is the amount of time they can save you. Rather than spending countless hours researching flights, accommodations, and activities, a travel agent can handle all the details for you. They have access to comprehensive databases, insider knowledge, and strong relationships with travel suppliers, allowing them to efficiently find the best options tailored to your preferences.

2. Personalized Itineraries:
Travel agents take the time to understand your travel interests, budget, and specific needs. With their expertise, they can curate personalized itineraries that perfectly match your preferences. Whether you're looking for a romantic getaway, a family-friendly adventure, or a luxury vacation, a travel agent can craft a tailor-made experience that exceeds your expectations.

3. Insider Knowledge and Expert Advice:
Being well-versed in the travel industry, travel agents possess valuable insider knowledge and connections. They are constantly updated on the latest trends, destination information, and travel regulations. This allows them to provide you with expert advice, recommend hidden gems, and suggest unique experiences that you might have missed if planning on your own.

4. Exclusive Deals and Savings:
Contrary to popular belief, using a travel agent doesn't always come with a hefty price tag. In fact, travel agents often have access to exclusive deals, promotions, and discounts that aren't available to the general public. They can help you find the best value for your money, whether it's through discounted hotel rates, package deals, or special perks like room upgrades or complimentary amenities. While some travel agents will charge a planning fee (I choose not to charge a planning fee for my services), you will never pay more than what you would pay by going direct to a supplier for your vacation.  Travel agents do not mark up the cost of travel, the suppliers pay them directly.  We can also set fare alerts for certain vacations as well!

5. Stress-Free Travel:
From booking flights and accommodations to arranging transportation and activities, a travel agent takes care of the entire planning process for you. This alleviates stress and ensures that every aspect of your trip is well-organized. In case any issues or unexpected changes arise during your travels, your travel agent is just a phone call away, ready to provide assistance and support.

As you can see, using a travel agent offers a multitude of benefits that can greatly enhance your travel experience. From saving you time and stress to providing insider knowledge and personalized service, these professionals are worth every penny. So, why not sit back, relax, and let a travel agent handle all the details while you focus on enjoying the journey.  I would love to help plan your next vacation!  Give me a call, send me an email or visit my website and we can get started!

Cruise Ship Fashion: Packing Tips for a Stylish Voyage

Ahoy, fashion lovers! Are you ready to set sail on a cruise ship adventure but unsure of what to pack? Don't worry, we've got you covered. In this blog post, we'll guide you through the art of dressing for a cruise. From poolside lounging to elegant dinner parties, we'll help you create a fabulous and versatile wardrobe that ensures you're always dressed to impress.

Casual Daytime Attire:
During the day, comfort is key. Opt for relaxed and lightweight clothing such as sundresses, shorts, and t-shirts. Don't forget to pack a swimsuit, cover-up, sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat for lounging by the pool or exploring sunny ports of call.

Evening Chic:
Most cruises lines have relaxed their evening dress codes from formal to a more elegant casual.  They still will have some nights where you can dress, so you might want to consider packing cocktail dresses, stylish separates, or tailored pants paired with fashionable tops. Make sure to include a versatile blazer or cardigan to layer up if the evenings get chilly.  For men, collard shirts, nice pants are what you will normally see.  If you choose to wear jeans, make sure they are neat, no ripped or torn jeans.  Some cruise lines do not allow shorts in the dining room, so keep that in mind.  Also, most cruise lines have a Buffett area, which is casual if you choose not to dress.

Themed Nights:
Cruise lines often host themed nights, such as tropical or 70s disco parties. Be sure to research the themes beforehand and pack accordingly. Don't be afraid to get creative and have fun with your outfits. Bold prints, vibrant colors, and accessories like hats or statement jewelry can add that extra touch of pizzazz.

Comfortable Shoes:
With all the exciting activities on board and shore excursions, having comfortable shoes is a must. Pack a variety of footwear, including sneakers or walking shoes for excursions, sandals for the pool and beach, and a pair of dress shoes for formal evenings.  Some excursions will require water shoes as well.  Make sure you do your research on this before hand.  A good travel agent can assist with this.

Practical Accessories:
In addition to your stylish clothing choices, don't forget about practical accessories. A tote bag for beach days, a small crossbody bag for exploring ports of call, a versatile scarf for layering, and sunscreen to protect your skin are all essential items to include in your cruise packing list.  I also like to bring some over the counter medicines such as Advil or Tylenol.  If you are prone to motion discomfort, bring some Dramamine or something equivalent.

Other Items:
While some cruise lines do provide shampoo and conditioner, some do not.  I always bring my own.  Most also have a blow dryer in the stateroom (again, I always bring my own).  Bring along your curling iron or straightening iron as well!

Now that you have some helpful guidelines for packing your cruise ship wardrobe, get ready to embark on a stylish and unforgettable adventure at sea. Remember to check the specific dress code policies of your chosen cruise line and plan your outfits accordingly. Bon voyage and sail away in style!

If you are ready to book your next cruise adventure, give us a call, send me an email or visit my website.  I would love to help plan your next trip!
